Snowed in? Here’s A Discount Code and Badge For Your Profile

This is my favorite infographic from the last storm in December
On the eve of yet another paralyzing snowstorm, I think back a few weeks ago to the last time we were snowed in for a day. We shoveled, hung around, and, like any good suburban family, spent a ton of time on the Internet.
With this weekend promising the same, I wonder why I’ve not seen one discount code on social networks or my email inbox. Seems like a no-brainer. It’s the perfect time to send me to a site where I can find out more information and buy something I’ve been considering.
The added layer is making a game of it. For each step in the discourse of buying — like watching an informational video, adding a product to a shopping cart, and checking out — should offer me a timely reward to display on my social network profiles. You could take a literal narrative approach, like providing badges at each level (“My answer to the snow? Eat cart.” or “I conquered the snow by shopping. At Roots.”) or a fun figurative play like badges that mark each stage in the progressively insane weather reporter.
The social and game mechanics are clearly a bit more than a throw-together, but you could generate an offer, an email, and a status update in just a few hours.
I’ll definitely be watching to see if anyone got a strategy off the ground after the last storm, and if you see something, please pass it on in the comments here or on Twitter @mleis.
